Meet Meera

Meera trained as a textile historian and came to guiding through the Banarasi silk workshops, which is still the part of the walk she most enjoys explaining.

Her heritage walk goes through the lanes rather than around them - the looms, the akharas, the tiny shrines wedged into wall corners that nobody photographs.

She built our Banaras food walk from her own breakfast route, which is why it starts at seven in the morning and finishes before the good kachori runs out.

Families ask for her repeatedly. She is unhurried with children, knows exactly which stretches are too crowded for a pram, and carries spare water for everyone.

What travellers said

Two children under eight and she never once made us feel like we were slowing things down. The weaving workshop was the highlight of their whole trip.

I have eaten in Banaras for thirty years and she took me to three places I did not know.
