Rajgir was the capital of Magadha long before Patna existed, and both the Buddha and Mahavira spent years here. The town sits in a bowl ringed by five hills, which is why it was easy to defend and why the walk up to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa is worth doing.

It is a single-seat open chairlift with an attendant at both ends. If it is not comfortable, there is a stepped path and a newer enclosed cable car.
Rajgir has a handful of decent hotels, but most of our guests stay in Bodhgaya and visit Rajgir and Nalanda as a day trip.
