Haridwar is the point where the Ganga finishes its run through the mountains and spreads out into the plains, and the whole town is organised around that fact. Har Ki Pauri, the main ghat, has a set of steps that people believe carry Vishnu's footprint, and every evening several thousand of them gather there for the aarti.
It is one of the four cities that host the Kumbh Mela, and even in an ordinary year the riverfront has a density and energy that surprises first-time visitors. Rishikesh, twenty-five kilometres upstream, is the quiet counterweight - most itineraries pair the two.
