Two nights and three days is the honest minimum for Varanasi, and it is also the length we book most. Here is exactly how we lay it out, including the parts that look like wasted time and are not.
Day one: arrive, then the evening aarti
Airport or station pick-up, check in near Assi or Dashashwamedh, and then deliberately nothing until late afternoon. Varanasi in the middle of the day is hot, loud and hard to love. The trip starts properly at five, walking down to the ghat, and finishes with the aarti watched from a boat.
- Stay within walking distance of a ghat - traffic makes anything else painful
- Late-afternoon walk down through the lanes rather than a vehicle drop
- Boat out for the 6.45 p.m. aarti, back by about 8 p.m.
- Dinner near the ghat, early night, because tomorrow starts at 5.30
Day two: the river, then the corridor
A 5.30 a.m. start for the sunrise boat from Assi, upstream past the burning ghats, back by seven. Breakfast, then Kashi Vishwanath through the corridor while the queue is still moving. Afternoon free. Evening for Sankat Mochan and Kaal Bhairav, which most itineraries skip and should not.
Day three: Sarnath and out
Sarnath in the morning with a guide, back for a late lunch, and departure. If your train is an evening one, spend the gap in Vishwanath Gali rather than at the hotel - the lanes at that hour are the best free thing in the city.
We had planned four temples for the afternoon. Vidya talked us out of all four and she was completely right.

Frequently asked
Two nights and three days covers the sunrise boat, the corridor, one evening aarti and Sarnath without rushing. Add a night if you want a free morning for the lanes and the food.
The lanes are narrow and uneven, and no vehicle can enter them. We plan shorter walking loops, use the vehicle to the closest possible drop point, and arrange a wheelchair at the ghat steps when it is needed - just tell us in advance.
